Hi everyone, I am really sorry that this one was so late. You are probably getting used to me saying that? I’ve been a bit busy/off for a while, hopefully my sleep schedule/life issues will improve soon.
You know, one thing I love about having fans that find me more through social justice communities than comics communities (besides not really having to worry about my comments exploding with fail) is that I feel like I can trust y’all to understand when I’m late/I miss a comic, that my reasons are legitimate. When I don’t feel pressure to over-explain myself and when I don’t feel like anyone is going to chew me out, it makes it a lot easier to eventually get my shit done and not throw in the tablet. (This post from QT comes to mind, in the ballfield of this topic.)
If you sent me an email, I got it and I appreciate it and I will write back as soon as I am functioning at full capacity again!
(p.s. everyone knows Maria is a trans woman, right? This is not a Thing I thought needed ExplainingTime, but if you are confused by today’s comic, then you may be missing this piece of information.)

↓ TranscriptMARIA hangs up her Janelle poster in her new dorm room.
CASEY: Uh, hello?
MARIA: Oh, hi! Can I help you?
CASEY: I don’t think I’m in the right room. My name’s Casey Reyes…?
MARIA’s face falls.
MARIA: It is devastating for me to inform you that, yes, you are in the right room. I’m just here to take down that poster.
CASEY: Uh, thanks. Are you my roommate’s sister?
oh god, i think i can see where this is going. And…it ain’t fun.
“p.s. everyone knows Maria is a trans woman, right?” It’s explicit on the cast page (heh, when I need more of a comic while waiting for an update I read all the extra content) but I’d never have got it from the hints in the comic (I am slow and read fast so less time for thinking). I thought she was a cis woman til I read the cast page, and then saw all the hints I should have noticed before.
OH! Now i get it! It took me about 30 reads to figure it out, though.
I’m looking forward to this story arc, even though I bet it’s gonna hurt.
… I knew she was trans, but it still took me a while to figure it out… I was almost googling the name in the poster, lol. But yeah, I’m sensing lots of trouble ahead, but at the same time, more Maria-time is always a good thing <3
I had no idea she was trans…..link me to the obvious hints!
Also I assumed Casey was a woman….dang gender-neutral names…
A trans lady who goes to church? *swoon* This makes me happy.

That one has a couple obvious clues, such as the trans symbol on her laptop. It’s pretty easy to miss though if you don’t read the cast page. And even then if you skim it; which happened to me the first time I read it.
(I too was confused by the situation not because of Maria but because I didn’t realize Casey was a man. And then I did and the oh crap set in.)
I am also glad you clarifed about Maria, because I only just started reading and I had not picked up that she was a trans lady at all. /0\ Like Emily, I also read Casey as being female the first time through, so I was extra-confused. *g*
